Mia's Birth Story

Warning! Long! ;-)

On Thursday, April 26th I checked in at the hospital at 4:00pm.  At 5:45 I was finally done with the million questions, had my line in and was just waiting for the doctor to come administer the Cervidil.  The Dr checked me and I was still only 1cm, she inserted the Cervidil a little after 6pm and said the plan was for me to stay on that for 12 hours; they would remove it at 6am and check my progress.

The next few hours were pretty uneventful, I was able to order some dinner, Jan & Kelly stayed and kept us company for a few hours.  Tom and Amy came by to visit and Shelly stopped by a little later as well.  Shelly was getting ready to leave around 10:30 when a nurse came in and introduced herself as Nicole, the baby nurse. Nicole told us that my contractions were getting more regular so they wanted to turn the warmer on “just in case”.  That got my hopes up and made Shelly question whether she should leave or not. However after another thirty minutes or so, everything still seemed to be about the same as it had been so Shelly went home. The nurse offered me an Ambien and suggested that I take it to try to get some sleep and rest up for the next day, I agreed, that was around Midnight.

I woke up around 2:30am feeling the contractions more, the nurse asked me if I wanted to get the epidural or try some IV medication.  I really didn’t want to take anything yet, so she suggested trying a hot shower. She had to check with the Dr first because she had to remove the Cervidil and check me prior to allowing me to get in the shower, I was at a 2/3 when she checked me. I got in the shower about 3:30am and it was wonderful! I had been feeling the contractions in my lower back and with the hot water pelting me I couldn’t feel anything. Rick asked me how long I was going to stay in the shower, I told him to ask the nurse how long she would let me ;-) I finally decided I really couldn’t stay in there forever and got out after about 30 minutes or so. Rick was making fun of me because my skin was so red from the hot water; he said it looked like I had a sunburn.  Within about 20 minutes of getting out of the shower I started feeling the contractions again so I went ahead and asked for the IV meds. Once those were onboard I fell asleep for a couple hours.

At 6am, my Dr came in and checked me, I was still a 2/3 and 70% effaced, and she ordered the Pitocin to be started.  I woke up shortly after change of shift when the new nurse Debbie came in to check on me, I told her I could feel the contractions a little bit, but nothing major and I was still able to sleep a little bit. Around 7:40am I felt a little pop and then another bigger pop and then the pain started. I woke Rick up and asked him to call the nurse, because something was happening. She came in and asked me if I felt wet, like my water broke, I said no, she checked and said that it hadn’t. I told her I wanted to use the restroom, when I sat down, gush, there was my water!  The pain was increasing at this point and I told her I was ready for the epidural now. Once I was back in bed she checked me again so she could let the Dr know exactly what was going on and I was at a 6, just that quick! I was really working on staying relaxed and breathing through the contractions because they were pretty consistent and quite strong at this point.  Rick was wonderful, he was rubbing my back and giving me sips of water. The nurse asked Rick if I was always that stoic, she said most people at a 6 that quick with their water broken would be climbing the walls.  I took that as a compliment and it helped me to continue to focus on breathing and not act like a crazy person ;-) Once the Dr approved the epidural, the nurse asked me if I would be able to sit still through the contractions long enough for it to be inserted.  I told her not to worry; I would do whatever needed to be done to get that epidural! I got the epidural around 9am and had instant relief, it was wonderful!

Jan and Kelly came back and took Rick down to the cafeteria for some lunch around 12:15pm…I had a popsicle, not much but better than just ice chips! While they were gone the Dr came in and I was now 8cm, 100% effaced and at 0 station. I was checked again at 3pm and I was 9cm, at this point they had me start trying different positions to move her down more and get me to 10(something I didn’t realize: when you turn from side to side, the side up in the air loses the medication from the epidural, fun!).

At 5pm things got a little crazy.  I was finally complete but I was only at +1 station. My Dr was also leaving and the new Dr coming on told her it had taken too long for me to progress and he wanted to do a C-section. Rick and I were a little taken aback as one minute I was being told that I was finally fully dilated and the next minute I was told I was going to have a C-section, I had not attempted to push and the new Dr hadn’t even examined me. My Dr kept apologizing and she and the nurse said that I could start pushing if I wanted, to see how it would go and maybe I would progress some more before the other Dr arrived. Of course I wanted to try that route first if possible, so I started pushing.  During this, meds were brought in for me and we were informed the OR was booked as well. It was pretty crazy. I was told I was pushing well and hopefully that would sway the Dr to change his mind when he arrived.  When the new Dr got there, he saw I was pushing and the nurse asked if that was ok to try for a while, he said he would let me push for an hour. Honestly, was he really going to say “NO, stop pushing and take her to the OR“ at that point? I think he had to know that wouldn’t go over well. Almost exactly to the hour deadline (according to Rick as I sure wasn’t watching a clock at this point) Mia decided to come out and join our family.  Mia Nicole was born Friday, April 27th at 6:54pm, she weighed 8lbs, 11oz and was 21" long, it was the most amazing moment of my life. We had waited so long to get to that point, it was surreal to hold her, our daughter, she was perfect and we were instantly in love.
